But I Do Everything Like That!

It's Always the Same.

how's that working out?

There’s a great quote by the author Martha Beck: “How you do anything is how you do everything."

I love that. Very deep, very spiritual, but alas, so very woo-woo.

For me, I need more specifics. And since most everything I think and do has do to with food, I made my own modification. I came up with: “The way you eat is a microcosm of the way you live.”

Tragically, because there are only so many words in the English language, it turns out Geneen Roth used those ones like twenty years ago. Well, she definitely used the word “microcosm”. But that was the coolest one. ☹

Not wanting to evoke any trademark violation type issues, I’ve done some tweaking and expounding. And what I came up with is even more spot-on with what I truly believe:

The way you eat is a snapshot how you feel about yourself: mindfully, with self compassion, or mindlessly - which often leads to self-judgement.”

You probably know this already, though. Or maybe you don’t really know it, but you’ve experienced it. Like my client Kris said:

“When I feel good about myself, I eat healthy, and I keep feeling good. But when things suck, I eat junk, and then I feel worse.”

Ever do that?

How you do anything is how you do everything.

I help my clients to be proactive.

Meaning, the more you can practice self-compassion, the more likely you’ll take good care of yourself and feel free to eat the whole wide range of foods in a balanced and thoughtful way. I don’t just focus on eating with my clients – life is more complex than that. We work on food, water, sleep, movement, stress management, relationships, spirituality – all the things that make up the gorgeous complicated thing that is you.

When all those things are in balance, you feel good about yourself. Free of judgement, guilt, and shame, you keep feeling good about yourself. You’re more mindful, more motivated, more present.

It’s a win-win. Eat mindfully = have more self-compassion. Have more self-compassion = eat more mindfully. Very appealing, very possible, but not easy.

Because you haven’t always done it that way.

After a few weeks of our work together, Kris told me:

“I’m not reacting with food now. I feel much more in control of my relationship with food and good about myself!”

Hoorah! That’s what I want for you, too. Tell me what’s going on with you and I’ll tell you if I think my approach would be helpful.

If being kinder and more friendly toward yourself are things you’d value, we'd definitely be a good fit.

Your friend,

Jennifer
